EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR)
The EU General Product Safety Regulation is the European Union law, applying since December 13, 2024, that requires every consumer product sold in the EU, including online, to be safe, traceable, and backed by a responsible business in the EU.
What it requires
Every non-food consumer product placed on the EU market needs an economic operator established in the EU that is responsible for its safety. The product or its packaging must show the manufacturer's name and postal and electronic address, a type, batch, or serial number, and warnings in the local language. Online listings must show the same contact details, product images, and warnings. Accidents must be reported through the Safety Business Gateway, and marketplaces must act on authority orders within two working days. Each member state sets its own penalties.
Why it matters
GPSR made product compliance data a requirement for selling into the EU at all, so a brand or 3PL that ships cross-border must check labels and listings before stock moves. Amazon and eBay now require responsible person details on EU listings. For example, a US brand selling candles to Germany through its own site must name an EU importer or authorized representative, print that contact and a batch number on each box, and keep the batch traceable through fulfillment so a recall can reach the right customers. A warehouse that mixes lots in one pick face makes that recall much harder.
