2022 Singapore

What happened and why it matters

Tuas shows how major transshipment hubs are rebuilding around automation and scale, which influences the reliability of Asian routings that US importers depend on. Singapore officially opened the port on September 1, 2022, with three berths in its first phase. When completed in the 2040s, it is planned to have 66 berths along 26 kilometers and handle 65 million TEU a year, as PSA consolidates its older city terminals there. Singapore is a key transshipment hub for cargo from South and Southeast Asia, including some US-bound freight. For importers, efficient hubs mean fewer missed connections, but transshipment still adds time compared with direct sailings.
