NotPetya Cyberattack
The NotPetya Cyberattack was a destructive malware outbreak in June 2017 that spread from Ukraine to companies worldwide, crippling the computer systems of Maersk and other shipping and logistics firms.
What happened and why it matters
NotPetya showed that a cyberattack can halt physical logistics, and it is a key reason shippers and 3PLs now treat IT resilience as part of supply chain risk. The malware hit on June 27, 2017, and wiped Maersk's systems so thoroughly that the company reinstalled about 45,000 PCs, 4,000 servers, and 2,500 applications over roughly 10 days, at an estimated cost of $250 million to $300 million. Bookings and terminal operations were disrupted, and FedEx's TNT Express unit was also badly hit. For fulfillment operators, the practical takeaways are offline backups, tested recovery plans, and manual fallbacks for receiving and shipping when the WMS is down.
