Units per Order

Units per Order (UPO) is the average number of individual items in each customer order over a period, also called units per transaction.

Topic: Metrics & Unit Economics Entry KPI-281

Why it matters for ecommerce brands

UPO drives packaging size, pick labor, and how much per-order costs like postage are spread across. Raising it lowers fulfillment cost per unit.

Formula and calculator

Units per order = total units shipped ÷ total orders shipped

Common questions

How do I increase units per order?
Common tactics are bundles, multipacks, free-shipping thresholds set above the typical cart, and product recommendations at checkout. Check that added units do not push packages into a higher dimensional weight tier.
