Serialization
Serialization is the practice of assigning a unique serial number to each individual unit of a product and recording it at receiving, shipment, and return.
Why it matters for ecommerce brands
Serial tracking supports warranty claims, theft and fraud checks on returns, and recalls for electronics and other high-value goods. It adds a scan step per unit, which raises fulfillment cost.
Common questions
- What is the difference between serial tracking and lot tracking?
- Lot tracking groups units made in the same batch under one lot number, which is enough for most recalls and expiration control. Serial tracking identifies every individual unit, which is needed for warranties, high-value items, and some regulated products.
