Serial Shipping Container Code

Retailers match the SSCC on each carton to the EDI 856 ASN. Missing or wrong labels are a top cause of retail chargebacks.

How do I get SSCC numbers for my cartons?

License a GS1 company prefix from GS1 US, then generate SSCCs by combining an extension digit, your prefix, a unique serial reference, and a check digit. Many WMS, EDI, and labeling tools generate them automatically once your prefix is set up.

• Advance Shipping NoticeAn electronic notice sent before a shipment arrives, listing its contents, packaging, and expected arrival. In retail EDI this is the 856 document.
• Chargeback (Retail Compliance)A deduction a retailer takes from a supplier's invoice for violating its routing guide or vendor requirements, such as late delivery, wrong labels, or missing ASNs.
• Electronic Data InterchangeStandardized electronic documents exchanged between trading partners, such as purchase orders (850), invoices (810), and advance ship notices (856).
