Robots-as-a-Service
Robots-as-a-service (RaaS) is a pricing model in which a warehouse pays a recurring fee, often monthly or per unit handled, to use robots instead of buying them outright.
Why it matters for ecommerce brands
RaaS turns robots from a capital purchase into an operating cost, which lowers risk for 3PLs and growing brands but can cost more over many years. You pay a monthly fee per robot or per unit handled, often with maintenance and software included. For example, a robot that costs $50,000 to buy might rent for $1,800 a month, so after about 28 months you have paid more than the purchase price. If you need it only for a 4 month peak, RaaS costs $7,200 instead. Check minimum terms and fees per unit.
Common questions
- Is it better to lease robots or buy them?
- Robots-as-a-service suits operations that want lower upfront cost, flexible capacity, or a trial period. Buying can cost less over a long, stable life, so compare total cost over the expected years of use.
- What does a RaaS fee usually include?
- Most RaaS contracts bundle the robots, software, maintenance, and support, and some also include integration and upgrades. Check minimum terms, volume tiers, and what happens if throughput falls short.
- Is RaaS a good fit for a 3PL?
- Often, because 3PL contracts and client volumes change, and RaaS lets capacity flex with them. Match the RaaS term to your client contracts so you are not paying for idle robots.
