Discrete Picking

Discrete Picking is a picking method where one picker picks one order completely, from start to finish, before starting the next order; also called single-order picking.

Topic: Fulfillment & Warehousing Entry FUL-081

Why it matters for ecommerce brands

It is simple and accurate, so it suits low volumes, large items, or urgent orders. At higher volumes the walking time per order makes it slower than batch or cluster picking.

Common questions

When does discrete picking make sense?
It makes sense for small warehouses, bulky or high-value items, and rush orders where accuracy and simplicity matter more than picks per hour. Most growing DTC operations move to batch or cluster picking as volume rises.
